THE SCHOOL CREST AND MEDIEVAL GUILD WORKSHOP
The intention of grade 4 project, was to complete a modern school crest, using materials concordant with traditional heraldic shields.
The school initiated a design contest to pool ideas. The chosen symbols were incorporated into a large shield design that expressed the students' thoughts on the purpose of their education.
While learning basic design and metal working skills, the class also roll-played the interaction of the guild membership around the project. The completed school crest was formally presented to the school Principal/ Patron/ King. Students experienced a practical application of history in the making.
This project focused on the grade 4, Medieval Times component of the History curriculum. Specifically, students covered the culture, design, technology, dominant thoughts and beliefs, social patterns and style of government of this period.
Visual Arts projects can blend easily into a larger performance project. In Summer Dance Camp, campers performed a choreographed dance piece while wearing their individualized heraldic shields displaying their personal strengths and interests.
